Data Mapping: The Foundation of System Integration

October 14th, 2022

Data mapping is the initial step in the system integration process in which data from a different sources is combined to a single location to improve data consistency. Data management software simplify this process by reducing or eliminating the need for manual processing, resulting in fewer errors, higher quality, more reliable data, and improved business processes.

Data mapping in system integration

Mapping allows different file systems to be consolidated in a single database (image source: https://zapproved.com/blog/what-is-data-mapping-and-why-does-it-matter-in-ediscovery/)

In electronic data interchange (EDI) processes, it converts a user’s application data into an EDI file format, and vice versa. Mapping outbound data involves establishing what information from the business or accounting software goes where in an EDI file. The data must be properly arranged and formatted so that it conforms to both the EDI standards and the trading partner’s requirements. Some data integration solutions enable users to map EDI data and then save that map as a template to reuse. Multiple data maps can be created for particular EDI transactions and each trading partner.

Inbound data must also be converted to a format that is compatible with the business or accounting system at the receiving end. EDI software can often map inbound EDI data directly into a variety of destination types, including:

  • Applications formats
  • Readable documents
  • Specific layouts like fixed length or delimited records
  • XML
  • Database tables

Handle Complex Data Mapping with Ease

Data from business partners and other third parties, as well as internal departments, can arrive in a myriad of common data formats that needs to be mapped to the main database system. Astera Centerprise is a powerful solution that supports all types of integrations (manual, point-to-point integration, semantic). It combines data quality, profiling, and automation capabilities into a single visual, code-free environment. Centerprise’s drag-and-drop capability of integrating different business systems makes it the best platform for overcoming the challenges of complex hierarchical structures such as XML, electronic data interchange (EDI), web services, and more.

Built-in Quality Capabilities

Centerprise ensures the highest, most reliable data quality thanks to built-in profiling, validation, and correction capabilities. It supports reusable maps and modular dataflow development, enhancing efficiency and freeing human resources for more important projects.

Powerful, Flexible, Cost-Effective

Centerprise is a powerful software solution that supports a broad range of file formats and databases, expediting the process of partner integration and time to market for mapping projects.

Visual Data Mapping

The code-free, visual environment ensures that anyone can create, debug, and manage complex dataflows and mappings. Astera designed Centerprise with an intuitive and user-friendly interface, enabling users to transform advanced tasks into basic drag-and-drop or single-click commands, with no need to write code or maintain generated code for any type of transformation. This improves productivity and efficiency when mapping, validating, and cleansing data. Customers and partners can be quickly integrated, boosting performance and profitability.
