What is an EDI 848 Material Safety Data Sheet?

EDI 848 transaction set allows the communication of chemical characteristics, hazards and the precautions for safe use and handling of material. This transaction set conveys the information which is needed for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) in the manner defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) the Hazard Communication Standards, 29 CFR 1910. 1200 in the United States, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS) in Canada and other various states, provinces, and any local requirements which fall under the right-to-know legislation.

The MSDS assists the receiver with the detailed information which is concerned with material identity, physical and chemical characteristics, emergency responses, industrial hygiene procedures, and toxicology. Federal and state law decide the party responsible for providing the MSDS and the party to whom it would be issued. Moreover, MSDS may be provided voluntarily by the third party or any other party having no statutory obligation. EDI 848 allows the transmission of MSDS data in the semi-structured, structured or unstructured form.

If the information is not properly and accurately transmitted it can be risky for human life, cause product mishandling, harm the environment, result in non-compliance of regulatory, and result in liability.

It is required by the trading partners to agree on how to store, interpret, and print/display MSDS text, and especially the text which is contained in the segments of MSG and SD1. The MSDS will not include the data element delimiter and segment terminator.
